Senator Mark Begich was the youngest person elected to the Anchorage Assembly and is the only Senator to serve without having a college degree. He was elected to the Assembly in 1988 where he served for 10 years. In 2003 he took office as the Mayor of Anchorage. Mark Begich assumed office as the U.S. Senator from Alaska in 2009. Mark Begich is up for re-election in 2014.
