Senator Murkowski received her BA in Economics from Georgetown University in 1980. She returned to Alaska and received her Law degree from Willamette University in 1985. She was in the DA office in Anchorage for two years and worked in Alaska Commercial Law for eight years. In 1998 Murkowski was elected to Alaska's State House of Representatives and served three terms there. She became the first Alaskan-born Senator when she won the U.S. Senate seat in 2002. Senator Mukowski is the senior Republican Member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee. After losing the Republican primary to Joe Miller, she pursued a vigorous write-in campaign, winning narrowly and becoming the first-ever sitting US Senator to be re-elected by write-in.
