William "Bill" Cassidy was born September 28, 1957. Prior to being elected, Dr. Cassidy specialized in the treatment of diseases of the liver, both in private practice and at the Earl K. Long Medical Center (LSUMC). On December 9, 2006, Cassidy won a special election for the District 16 seat in the Louisiana Senate. On November 4, 2008, he defeated incumbent Democratic Congressman Don Cazayoux, becoming only the second Republican challenger to unseat a Democratic incumbent at the federal level in Louisiana. In April 2013, Bill Cassidy announced he would challenge Sen. Mary Landrieu in the 2014 election.
