Former state Senator Mark Amodei emerged as the winner of Nevada's 2nd Congressional District special election held in September 2011, easily sweeping past Democrat Kate Marshall in this economically-wounded state. Amodei took 58 percent of the vote to his opponent's 36 percent. He won the general election 58 to 36% over Samuel Koepnick. In 2011, Democrats said that the rural northern Nevada district did what it has always done and sent a Republican to Congress, and the GOP heralded the the election as a victory against President Barack Obama. History was on Amodei's side. The district made up of conservative voters has never elected a Democrat and Republicans had a 32,000-vote registration edge heading into Election Day. Mark Amodei's 2012 race margin, even with Obama on the ballot, was nearly the same as in 2011.
