Joe Manchin won two terms as Governor of West Virginia. He then won the Senate seat formerly held by Robert Byrd, the longest serving Senator in United States history. He was born and raised in the small coal mining town of Farmington, West Virginia. After attending West Virginia University on a football scholarship, he became a successful businessman. He was a state legislator from 1982–1996, where he earned a reputation for standing up for West Virginians. Joe Manchin was Secretary of State from 2000–2004 He is an avid pilot, outdoorsman, hunter, angler and motorcyclist. He has been married for 42 years to the former Gayle Conelly of Beckley. Joe Manchin and his wife have three children.
