Debbie Stabenow attended Michigan State University where she received her Bachelors degree (1972) and her Masters degree (1975). In 1974, Stabenow was elected to the Ingham County Board of Commissioners and served as Chairperson from 1977-1978 making her the youngest and first woman to serve as Chair. She served in the Michigan State House of Representatives from 1979-1990 and in the State Senate from 1991-1994. She was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1996 and in 2000, Senator Stabenow was elected to the U.S. Senate where she Chairs the Deomcratic Steering and Outreach Committee. Debbie Stabenow won election again in 2012 over Pete Hoekstra.
