About

 John Lewis was born on February 21, 1940 in Troy, Alabama. In 1961, Lewis received his Bachelor degree in theology from American Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1963, he earned his Bachelor degree in religion and philosophy from Fisk University. Lewis was a member of the Atlanta City Council from 1982-1986. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1986. A leader in the civil rights movement, he became prominently known during the Selam to Montgomery Marches.  John Lewis is the Democrat House Senior Chief Deputy Whip.
