Mike Thompson was elected to represent California's 1st Congressional District in 1998. Before that, Thompson represented California's 2nd District in the California State Senate where he chaired the Budget Committee. He is onthe House Committee on Ways and Means, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and serves as lead Dem of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Human Intelligence, Analysis and Counterintelligence. Thompson served in combat with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant/platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He was an instructor at the Army's Airborne School. Mike Thompson was born on January 24, 1951 in Helena, California. In 1982, Thompson received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from California State University. He later returned to California State University to earn his Master's degree in Public Administration in 1996. Thompson is a small vineyard owner and has taught Public Administration and State Government at San Francisco State University and California State University, Chico. Mike Thompson and his wife have two sons, a firefighter and a deputy sheriff.
