Peter Welch was born on May 2, 1947 in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1969, Welch received his Bachelor's degree in History from the College of the Holy Cross. In 1973, he earned his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Welch was a member of the Vermont Senate from 1981-1989 and was the Minority Leader from 1983-1985. He was the President Pro Tempore from 1985-1989. Welch returned to the Vermont Senate from 2002-2006 and was the President Pro Tempore from 2003-2006. Peter Welch was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2006.
