Senator Dick Durbin attended Georgetown University and received his BS in 1966; Juris Doctor in 1969. He represented Illinois' 20th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983-1997. He assumed his U.S. Senate seat in 1997. He was elected to the post of Assistant Majority Leader (Majority Whip) in 2006 and has been elected every two years since to this leadership post. Dick Durbin is expected to try for the top Senate Democratic leadership slot once Harry Reid retires.
