Tom Carper graduated from Ohio University in 1968 with a BA in Economics. He served for five years as a Naval Flight Officer and then continued to serve in the Naval Reserves. He retired from the military in 1991 with the rank of Captain. Carper was elected as Delaware's State Treasurer in 1976. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982. In 1993, Tom Carper became the 78th Governor of Delaware. In 2001, he became the Junior Senator of the U.S. Senate for Delaware. Tom Carper became the Senior Senator when then Senator Joe Biden stepped down in 2009.
